Thursday Three: Hair, a talk show, and a wedding

Oh, hey there. I have some random bloggy stuff to blog about. I’ll call them the Thursday Three.

1. I was in Kansas City a couple of weekends ago for a wedding. I had a lovely time catching up with sorority sisters and old college friends. This is the first time I've been “in” a wedding. It’s an experience being part of the wedding party rather than a guest. All the running around and last minute prepping put me in ultra-planner/organizer mode. And I was only a hostess. Fifteen women getting dressed, and having their hair and makeup done in a cozy hotel suite is definitely an experience. It all came together beautifully in the end. I can only imagine what people go through planning an entire wedding. Can you say stressful?

In mid-September I set a goal to lose 10 pounds in 4 weeks, just in time for the wedding. I wanted to look my best in my ultra mini cocktail hostess dress. My total loss was 5.5 pounds. I did not reach my goal, but I am happy with my progress so far. My dress didn't fit much differently than when I originally tried it on, but the weight loss helped me feel more comfortable. I’m still aiming to reach my 10 pound goal before Thanksgiving. I woke up early the day of the wedding to run on the hotel gym treadmill and lift some weights. I'm determined to reach my goal!

It rained the entire day of the wedding, so the Bantu knot out style I had planned for my hair got a little puffy. Gotta love natural hair. I absolutely loved my makeup, though. When I grow up, I will have a personal makeup artist on call at all times.

2. After the wedding, I was itching to do this to my hair.

I love my pink streak. After two weeks, it’s already fading. I’m considering adding more. It’s Manic Panic which is non-permanent, and washes out very easily. Blogger Curly Nikki was in Chicago last weekend.

I rocked the pink streak at a very nice event she hosted promoting Motions new Naturally You hair care line. The pink hair got a few awkward looks, not surprising. Then, my sister directed me to Curly Nikki’s blog post the following Wednesday where she’s rocking a blue streak in her hair! Really cute! I also met one of my favorite bloggers at the event, Cassidy Blackwell.

Like me, she has a super coily texture so I admire the different cuts and styles she’s rocked with her natural hair. Her haircut is fierce in person. I walked away with the entire Naturally You product line. I washed, conditioned, deep conditioned, and styled with all the products over the weekend. I love the way it smells, and my hair feels very moisturized. I think I’ll write a full review soon.

3. I again co-hosted the Nappturalite Radio Show last week. The show topic was Detoxing 101-Benefits for Physical & Mental Health. I shared my experience with the Master Cleanser. I finished the 10 day cleanse way back in 2006, but I remember it like it was yesterday. Check out the replay of the show here! Singer Leela James was on the show and Raw Food Goddess, Nwenna Kai chatted with us about her raw lifestyle and recipe book.

I think that about sums up my Thursday Three!

2012 Chicago Marathon and 2013 Chicago Women's Half Marathon & 5K happenings

I’m a little late posting this; the 2012 Bank of America Chicago Marathon came and went this past weekend. The marathon is always a magical time in Chicago! Nearly 40,000 people participated in the race. I have zero desire to run a marathon, but I admire those who dedicated the time to train all summer and completed the distance. I’ve lived in Chicago for five years now, and it’s crazy how each year I know more and more people running the marathon. Several ladies in my run group participated this year. NBC Chicago produced a very nice piece on Black Girls RUN! Chicago and highlighted a few particpants in their week long marathon coverage leading up to the race.

Hey, they even sprinkled me in there! They recorded about 10 minutes each of us answering interviewer, Lici Lytle’s questions. Being interviewed on camera is a little intimidating. I prayed I didn’t come out sounding like a babbling fool in the finished report! The whole thing is very nicely done and it does a great job of representing Black Girls RUN!’s positive impact on Chicagoland and all over the country.

At the marathon expo, I worked the booth for the Chicago Women’s Half Marathon & 5K talking to people about the race, passing out flyers, and getting folks registered. Tori and Mel from Fellow Flowers stopped by the booth to register.

I had never heard of their group before. They wear different color flowers that represent why they run. Freaking adorable. Tons of people were stopping by the booth and signing up, I sense a sold out race coming!

This is such a fun race, and it’s the only all women’s half marathon in Chicagoland. I ran the half this year, but I think I’ll run the 5K next year. I have two sprint distance triathlons on my 2013 schedule, one being in June. I want to focus my training on that. Congratulations to all the Chicago Marathon finishers! Here's to being fully recovered by now. . .

Weight loss struggles

I’ve been incredibly busy these past few weeks, in a good way. This fall has been the season for travel. I mentioned last month I was in Las Vegas for a bachelorette party and Atlanta for the Black Girls RUN! race. I was also in St. Louis hosting a friend’s baby shower, and this month I’ll be in Kansas City participating in a wedding.
Phew! On top of all my travel plans, on September 15th I decided to set the goal for myself of losing 10 pounds by October 13th. How’s that coming along? Miserably. I was down 3.5 pounds at the start of week two, which is good, but by the end of this past week, my weight loss was flat. I don’t expect to reach my goal by the end of this week, but I will continue to work on losing. As part of my weight loss efforts, I tried a new workout during my St. Louis visit. My sister has been raving about the classes at Title Boxing Club, so I joined her as a guest at the Creve Coeur location. Wow, it was bananas. I’m not a huge fan of upper body workouts, so I expected it to suck going into it. We actually ended up working our entire bodies. In between punching sequences, we did other intervals: running laps, lunges while holding medicine balls overhead, reverse crab crawls, and more. We also worked our abs at the end of the workout. I was pooped by the time the hour was over. It was a great workout though. I loved punching the crap out of that bag! There just happen to be a few locations near Chicago, I would love it if another location popped up closer to the city.
To help with weight loss, I also stopped drinking beer. I haven’t cracked open a cold one in over two weeks. This is quite the accomplishment since I love beer! I have however still enjoyed red wine (It’s good for heart health, right?). This week I started using a new app on my phone, Lose It! This has been an eye opener for me to realize that even with exercise, I was consuming too many calories for weight loss. I would like to lose 20 pounds overall, but I’m taking it 10 pounds at a time. I think varying my workouts and the use of this app will help to keep me on track to meet my goal.
